2015 LEXUS RX 350 VS. 2015 MERCEDES-BENZ GLK 350 WHICH IS BETTER OFF-ROAD?

The debate is simple but interesting: Is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 better off-road than the 2015 Lexus RX 350?

Some people would immediately choose the Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 because of its more rugged appearance, available 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and boxier SUV design.

But I don't completely agree that the GLK 350 is automatically the better choice.

The 2015 Lexus RX 350 also offers all-wheel drive, strong traction, a smooth V6 engine, and excellent comfort on rough roads.

So let's put these two luxury SUVs head-to-head and see which one deserves the advantage when the road ends.

1. Engine and Power

Both vehicles use a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine, giving them plenty of power for normal driving and difficult road conditions.

On paper, the Mercedes has the horsepower advantage.

However, horsepower alone does not determine which vehicle is better off-road.

Weight, traction, drivetrain, tires, ground clearance, suspension, and the driver's ability all matter.

The RX 350 AWD also provides traction to help when roads become slippery, muddy, or covered with loose gravel.

For normal off-road situations such as dirt roads, gravel roads, muddy roads, and rough Nigerian roads, both can be useful.

But neither vehicle should be confused with a serious body-on-frame off-road SUV.

3. Which One Looks More Ready for Off-Roading?

I'll give this one to the Mercedes-Benz GLK 350.

The GLK has a boxier and more traditional SUV appearance. It simply looks more prepared to leave the pavement.

The RX 350 has a more crossover-oriented design. Lexus focused heavily on comfort, refinement, and everyday usability.

But looking more rugged doesn't automatically mean being more capable.

4. Comfort on Rough Roads

Now we come to one of the RX 350's strongest points.

The Lexus RX 350 was designed to provide a comfortable and quiet ride.

Even when the road becomes rough, the RX can feel more relaxed and refined than many sportier SUVs.

The GLK 350 can also handle poor roads, but its driving character is more focused and firm.

For someone who regularly drives long distances on bad roads and wants comfort, the RX 350 remains a very strong choice

5. Reliability and Long-Term Ownership

This is where I would strongly defend Lexus.

The RX 350 has earned a reputation for being a dependable luxury crossover when properly maintained

The GLK 350 can also be a reliable vehicle, but Mercedes-Benz ownership can become more expensive as an older vehicle develops maintenance or electrical issues.

So if the question changes from:

“Which one feels more rugged?”

to:

“Which one would I rather own for many years?”

I would seriously consider the Lexus RX 350.

6. But Is the RX 350 Really an Off-Road SUV?

Here's the honest answer:

Not really.

The RX 350 is primarily a luxury crossover.

It can handle poor roads, gravel, dirt, light mud, and other rough conditions, especially with AWD and appropriate tires.

But if you're talking about deep mud, rocks, steep trails, water crossings, and serious off-road driving, neither the GLK 350 nor RX 350 should be your first choice.

That's where something like the Lexus GX 460 becomes a completely different conversation.

7. So Which One Wins?

If we're talking about light off-roading and rough roads, both vehicles can do the job.

If we're talking about sportier driving, rugged appearance, and available 4MATIC, I'd give the Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 an advantage.

But if we're talking about comfort, reliability, everyday usability, and long-term ownership, I'd choose the Lexus RX 350.

And if we're talking about serious off-roading, I wouldn't choose either one.

I'd take the Lexus GX 460.

So, do I agree that the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 is simply better than the 2015 Lexus RX 350 off-road?

Not completely.

The GLK 350 has some advantages, especially its rugged design and available 4MATIC system.

But the RX 350 should not be underestimated. It offers AWD capability, comfort, dependable V6 power, and excellent everyday usability.

Ultimately, the winner depends on what you mean by “better.”

For serious off-roading, however, my Lexus choice would be clear:
