It was not simply an IS with a more aggressive appearance. Lexus developed the IS F with a specially engineered 5.0-liter V8, performance-focused suspension and braking systems, and extensive racetrack testing to give it genuine high-performance capability on both the road and the track.

The name “F” is closely associated with Fuji Speedway in Japan, where Lexus conducted high-speed development and testing. The shape of Fuji Speedway’s first turn also inspired the design of the F logo.

The LFA Took Lexus Performance to Another Level

The next major chapter was the Lexus LFA.

With its naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V10 engine, lightweight carbon-fiber construction, advanced engineering and extraordinary attention to detail, the LFA became the ultimate expression of Lexus performance.

Only 500 examples were produced worldwide, making the LFA one of the most exclusive and recognizable Lexus performance cars ever built.

More importantly, the LFA demonstrated that Lexus was capable of developing a genuine supercar from a clean sheet of paper, rather than simply modifying an existing luxury model. Its development pushed Lexus into new territory in performance, materials and engineering.

The GS F Brings F Performance to a Sedan

Lexus continued expanding the F family with the GS F.

The GS F combined the practicality of a four-door luxury sedan with the character and capability of a serious performance car.

Its naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 produced 467 horsepower, while a performance-focused suspension, reinforced chassis, powerful Brembo brakes and Lexus’ Torque Vectoring Differential helped give the sedan sharper handling and greater driver control.

The GS F proved that a high-performance Lexus did not have to sacrifice everyday comfort and usability. It could deliver sports-car-like performance while remaining a refined four-door luxury sedan for everyday driving.

The RC F Brings the F Formula to a Coupe

The RC F took the F philosophy into a dramatic two-door coupe.

Powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, the RC F combined aggressive styling with a performance-focused chassis, adaptive suspension, powerful Brembo brakes and engineering developed to deliver serious driving capability.

Lexus developed the RC F with serious driving enthusiasts in mind, giving it track-proven hardware and the capability to handle demanding road and track driving. The result was a performance coupe that balanced speed, control and the refinement expected from Lexus.

The RC F chapter has now ended, with production concluding after the 2025 model year, but its place in Lexus performance history remains important.

F vs F SPORT: What Is the Difference?

The F and F SPORT names are not simply different ways of saying the same thing.

Lexus F models were developed as dedicated high-performance vehicles, with substantial engineering changes involving areas such as the powertrain, suspension, brakes, chassis and aerodynamics. Lexus describes the F badge as its highest expression of factory-engineered performance.

F SPORT, on the other hand, was created as a broader performance-oriented range. Depending on the model, F SPORT can bring sportier styling, wheels, suspension tuning, handling upgrades and other performance-focused equipment while retaining the vehicle's everyday luxury character.

Lexus later introduced F SPORT Performance as a higher-performance tier positioned between conventional F SPORT models and the full F performance cars. The first model was the IS 500 F SPORT Performance, featuring a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 producing 472 horsepower.

That distinction is important because the F badge represents something deeper than appearance. It represents a different level of engineering, development and performance within the Lexus lineup.

Lexus is developing new vehicle architectures, electrified powertrains and advanced performance technologies as it moves into its next generation of vehicles. Recent models such as the RZ have already shown how Lexus is using electrification to enhance driving performance, with technologies including DIRECT4 all-wheel drive, Steer-by-Wire and higher-output electric powertrains.

That does not mean the qualities that made the F cars special have to disappear.

Instant electric torque, sophisticated all-wheel-drive control, lightweight construction, advanced chassis technology, precise steering and new powertrain solutions could create an entirely different kind of Lexus performance car. Lexus has already demonstrated this direction through its development of next-generation BEV technology focused on low centers of gravity, improved driving dynamics and a closer connection between driver and vehicle.

The question is no longer whether Lexus can build a performance car.

The real question is how far Lexus will take the next generation.

A New Chapter for Lexus

The original F cars proved that Lexus could step outside its traditional comfort zone and build vehicles focused on genuine driving performance.

Today, the brand is entering another period of change.

The future of Lexus performance could combine the character and precision of the F heritage with electrification, advanced technology and completely new approaches to vehicle development. 

Lexus has already demonstrated this direction through its work on high-performance electrification, advanced all-wheel-drive control and next-generation BEV technology.

The badge may evolve.

The powertrain may change.

The technology may become more advanced.

But the fundamental goal can remain the same: creating Lexus vehicles that make driving feel special and give the driver a stronger connection with the car.
